Our heroine became interested in embroidery as a child, and after she abandoned her scientific career, choosing a needle and thread.

About the page author

Our heroine today is Mary Corbet, she lives in the USA. Mary is a fairly well-known master and blogger in the embroidery community, she has a popular embroidery site and an Instagram page dedicated to the same. Mary devoted herself entirely to her beloved work. Here is her story: “I learned to embroider when I was still a child. Then everyone basically embroidered with a cross, remember the 1980s? Then I became interested in embroidering stitching, finding knowledge and skills wherever possible.

Then, while I was in college, I became interested in the topic of embroidery more seriously. I studied art history, and interest in historical and church embroidery grew in me. I began to read a lot on the topic, collecting books on embroidery and samples of ancient works. I myself tried different techniques, each time trying to find the answer to the question that tormented me: "How is this done?". And I didn’t calm down until I understood. "Having received a bachelor's degree and worked a little at school, Mary entered graduate school and became a college professor, but was engaged in embroidery in parallel." After 18 years in the academic world, 5 of which I was simultaneously creating and developing my own site, it became clear that I need to make a choice, says Mary.“And I took a decisive step, abandoning my academic career and fully devoting myself to needle and thread.”

What is this page about

“I believe the world needs beauty, and embroidery is one of the most beautiful visual arts,” says Mary. And the work that can be seen on her page on Instagram is a great confirmation of this. Our heroine embroiders in different techniques and styles, more often - closer to traditional, often - in a modern rethinking. And invariably, these are superbly executed and beautiful works that deliver aesthetic pleasure and make you admire the mastery of the author. In addition to her own works, Mary publishes on her page photos of old embroideries.
