This maxi skirt is simple and versatile. You can sew a skirt without a pattern.
This skirt is suitable for summer, spring and autumn, can help make up a casual or elegant set. It has pockets, and an elastic band in the back of the belt makes it easy to remove and put on a skirt without a fastener. The skirt is sewn of thin synthetic knitwear with a tone lining.
How to sew a knitted pencil skirt without a pattern in 30 minutes: master class + video
You will need:
- thin synthetic knitwear;
- lining fabric;
- wide elastic tape for the belt (3.5-4 cm);
- adhesive pad;
- tape measure;
- ruler;
- marker for tissue;
- scissors;
- safety pin;
- tailor pins;
- a sewing machine (and if there is an overlock) and threads;
- iron and ironing board.

Step 1
Find the details:
- 2 parts from knitwear: measure the circumference of the hips, multiply the value by 2.5 and divide by 2 - the width of the part; skirt length + seam allowance on top - part length;
- 2 parts from the lining fabric: the girth of the hips multiply by 1.5 and divide by 2 - the width of the part; the length of the part is the same as that of knitwear parts;
- 2 parts of the front of the belt, 1 of the lining fabric and 1 of the knitwear: width - half-waist (the place where you will wear the skirt - directly on the waist or below) + 2.5 cm + allowances for the side seams; height 11 cm;
- 2 parts of the back of the belt, 1 of the lining fabric and 1 of the knitwear: width - hips minus half waist plus 2.5 cm; height 11 cm;
- 4 details of burlap pockets made of lining fabric; (use the pocket pattern in the side seam of the skirt from another model or download and print the pattern here or here);
- gasket for a belt made of gasket material: the width is equal to the width of the belt parts, the height is equal to the width of your rubber;
- elastic tape: the length of the desired length is equal to the half-waist.
On the back of the belt part, find the midline along the part. Glue the strip strip so that its upper edge coincides with the middle line of the belt part. Repeat with the detail of the front of the belt.
Step 2
Fold knitwear parts with their faces out. From above, on the sides, measure the distance of the entrances into the pockets and place marks. Sew the front and back panels to the marks with a French seam (how to do it, read here or watch the video here).
Fold the lining details with their faces inward, also place marks. Sew the side seams to the marks on the overlock or on the machine with a simple stitch and then zigzag the edges.
Step 3
1 cm away from the top edge, lay a stitch with a long stitch length on the front and back panels of knitwear. Put the lining in the skirt. Assemble the front and back panels of knitwear to the width of the parts from the lining. Pin the front panels from the lining and the jersey with pins and, 0.5 cm from the stitch down, lay the same stitch.
Step 4
Fold the details of the burlap pockets in two with the front sides inward, sew and process the seams, except for the pocket entries.
Turn the skirt inside out, put the pockets between the front and back parts and pin it with pins, capturing both the knitwear and the lining. Sew pockets and sew seams.
Step 5
Fold the front parts of the belt from knitwear (face down) and from the lining fabric (face down) and sew on the long sides. Repeat with the details of the back of the belt. Fold the belt details face to face, sew the short sides into a ring and process the seams.
Step 6
Assemble the front panel to the width of the part of the front of the belt. Do the same with the rear panels, focusing on the detail of the back of the belt.
Sew manually the front and back panels from above 2 cm.
Align the edges of the belt and skirt, as shown in the photo, pin with pins. Sew a belt with a skirt and sew a seam.
Step 7
Turn the skirt inside out. Fold the belt along the center line, fold it inward so that the fold is slightly below the seam, and pin it with pins. Lay the seam on the front side so that the stitch runs along the line connecting the belt and skirt. Sew this belt only at the back.
Insert elastic tape into the back of the belt and sew its edges on the sides. Then sew the front of the belt.
Step 8
Align the hem of the skirt (read the detailed master class here). Lining 2.5–5 cm shorter than the skirt. Trim the bottom of the skirt and lining.
